Netreg is no longer in service as of 2019.


Feb 2019: With the introduction of EfficientIP, it is not yet clear how and if dynamic DNS will work at Brandeis (or how we would want it to work. However, many of the previously extent names generated by the old netreg system live on in EfficientIP. 


As of 19 August 2015, Dynamic DNS as described below does NOT work if you are connected to eduroam, due to changes in DHCP instituted by NetSys to simplify the initial connection process.

How to determine the DNS name of your computer as given by Netreg

The name is:

username is the UNet ID of the owner (person who registered it)

nickname is the name assigned to it in Netreg (e.g. “ferret” in the example below). You can check your registered computers at

thus, the first device below can be found at

this name will follow your computer around even when it changes IP address.

if the nickname field is blank, you must create a nickname (use the edit link) for this to work
